Wisbech bowler Apted halts March’s chance of derby upset
Underdogs March ran the hosts close in Saturday’s Tucker League 15-run derby defeat at second-placed Wisbech.
The visitors contained Wisbech to 207-9 led by Josh Bowers’ 44, with Chris Ringham, Andy Wright, Toby Nulty and Ash Vodnala all picking up two wickets and stand-in skipper Tyler Phillips returning with a 12 over burst.
Vodnala (54) and Matty Vail (36) produced the season’s highest partnership of 75 runs for the fifth wicket and while they were at the crease victory looked well on the cards at Harecroft Road.
But when Vail went, March lost their final six wickets for just 29 runs, mainly to Bradley Apted. They finished on 192 and now slip into the relegation zone.
Apted usually stars on the hockey field, but has the odd game for Wisbech. In his first bowling spell of the summer the Kiwi had a four-over spell of 4-14.
Wisbech and Godmanchester both have a game in hand on leaders and reigning champions Ramsey.
March 2nds ended Godolphin’s five-game unbeaten run by 10 runs at The Avenue.
Steve Hinson’s 40 inside the first 11 overs of the CCA Senior League Division 1 match, set them on the road to a 184 total. Nathan Oliver hit 22 while Man of the Match Dan Martell (47) and skipper John Wallis (21) produced 55 runs for the fourth wicket.
A 4-47 spell from the returning James Fountain gave March the boost they required. Despite the team bowling 28 wides, they managed to pick up a valuable 20 points, with James Shepherd taking 2-26.
