Pupils at a Wisbech school have heard how children in the town have played a vital role in helping secure the future of the town’s historic St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church.

Year 4 children at Ramnoth Road Junior School were given a special insight into a half-a-million pound project which has helped bring essential repairs to the 900 year old church and make it fit for the 21st century.

Today (Wednesday) as part of the project the pupils were tasked with writing newspaper articles on the scheme with the help of Citizen reporter Sarah Cliss.

The pupils heard from Val Spriggs, church treasurer and project co-ordinator for the ‘Church of the Future Scheme’ who spoke of the Parish Project Team's delight in March last year when it was announced they had secured more than £360,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to carry out essential work.

Previously the church had received £56,300 made possible by National Lottery players, to help to develop the programme of repairs and improvements the historic building needed.

Mrs Spriggs outlined the project’s aims virtually and explained to the children how school pupils have played a pivotal role in helping the grant bid succeed after being included in the development phase as one of the project’s partner schools.

She explained the history behind the bid and why the lottery funding was so vital to help repair the Grade I listed building.

Mrs Spriggs described the horror the church members felt when they saw the damage to the roof which was badly rotting, and also that the masonry was crumbling and both were in urgent need of repair.

She explained the work which has been undertaken including the installation of new lead to protect the roof, which itself has been protected by a state-of-the-art alarm to prevent it from being stolen.

"Anyone getting up on the roof is in for a real shock," she said. "There will be a loud voice shouting at them and then a really loud alarm will sound so everyone knows someone is on St Peter's Church roof."

Mrs Spriggs explained that alongside the essential repairs work was being carried out to provide extra facilities inside the church, including a new kitchen and toilets, to make the building more suitable as a community venue for concerts, plays and other events.

"St Peter's Church belongs to everyone in Wisbech, we want people to come to concerts, attend services, pop in for a look round and generally enjoy the church," she said.

The new facilities will aid in that hope and enable the church to extend help to the town’s homeless by being able to provide hot food and drinks particularly in the winter months.

It will also be more suitable for major events like a summer music festival. The first one of which is planned for this year and will be dedicated to the memory of Lesley Mardle, who played such an important role within the church and had started to make plans for the festival before her death in July 2020. She was also former headteacher of the Nene Infants School.

The wider Wisbech community played its part in ensuring the lottery bid was successful and that included this newspaper, which has highlighted why the project is so important and helped the school pupils get involved in the process over the last four years.

The children’s role has been to help spread the word of what’s happening with St Peter’s and aid the church’s aim of showing it is being inclusive to all parts of the community which was a key part of the bid.

As well as Ramnoth partner schools, including St Peter’s and The Orchards, have also been involved in the project.

Sarah Cliss joined Ramnoth's three year 4 classes online to offer them guidance on writing their newspaper articles which were to highlight work that has been carried out at the church, and its aspiration for the future.
