Students tapped into the glory days of cult band Queen when they dished up their own version of We Will Rock You at Wisbech Grammar School.

A cast involving students from all year groups, together with guest appearances from pupils at Magdalene House Preparatory School, wowed audiences with a three-night run of the show earlier this month.

Rehearsals after school and at weekends have been setting toes tapping during the autumn term under the directorship of Dr Adrian Jarvis, with support from the music department, as well as other staff helping with the dance, staging and the light and sound management.

The musical, based on the seventies and eighties songs of Queen and with a book by comedian Ben Elton, tells of Bohemian rebels striving to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion and live music in a dystopia shackled by conformity.

Director of music Gabriel Fitzsimmons said: “The show has been a success, with cast members rising to the challenging music, dance routines and acting scenes and, in particular, making their own contributions to the overall design and presentation.

“There has been much enthusiasm and commitment throughout and it has been a pleasurable experience all round.”
