Nearly 100 children had a ball playing cricket during a summer holiday camp.

Wisbech Cricket Club welcomed youngsters aged between six and 16 to a week of activities at their base in Harecroft Road.

The club hosts the academy every year to provide sporting activities for children during the summer holidays, along with the aim of attracting new members to the club.

Between 60 to 80 children enjoyed a range of cricket-based activities for three days. This was followed by an indoor league for more experienced players on the fourth day, while matches were played during the final session.

The sessions were not just aimed at youngsters, as their parents also got involved with the evening activities, including the Mendi’s lads versus dads match, which was won by the fathers. Mums also took on the youngsters in a match.

And Wisbech took on a team from March in a T20 match. Later in the week the team also played Downham Town in a T20 match.

The week was rounded off with a presentation evening.

Club chairman Bob Burgess was delighted. He said: “It was a brilliant week and helped by a £500 donation from Wisbech Round Table and £200 from the Rotary Club. Tesco also provided the teas.

“We have got some new guys who came along to the academy and are interested in playing at the weekends.

“Some of the parents have also expressed an interest in playing next year. It is important for us to keep on attracting people to the club.”
