It should be humbling

YOUR anonymous correspondent, clearly in bits at seeing offenders on community service being made to wear ‘Community Payback’ vests, might like to run his or her concerns by an Amnesty International representative.

I think it may come as a surprise just how far removed from “torture” such a procedure is.

I’m no ‘hang ‘em and flog ‘em man’ and I would endorse any rehabilitation scheme going but a penal system is supposed to be humbling.

It is supposed to chasten. It is supposed to instil in its ‘customers’ so strong a resolve never to marginalise themselves in such a way again that they stay on the right side of the law for the rest of their days.

It can do all of this and still be perfectly civilised. We’re talking vests, after all, not the stocks.
