Time for a referendum

I REFER to the report in the Citizen (August 10) that March Town Council is proposing to spend £30k to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

I advocate the money should go to the air ambulance or to charity. As is common knowledge, the wedding cost millions of pounds and now the jubilee will cost even more while the establishment will take full advantage to ensure there is maximum publicity to boost the monarchy,

The country is in deep recession with staggering debts, wages static, mass unemployment, savage cuts to all our services while the country is at war with Iraq and Afghanistan.

The monarchy is an unelected constitution there only by birth which is totally undemocratic. Through the centuries the people have never been consulted and therefore having no voting rights.

We are now well into the 21st Century and the people must be given the right to make their own choice by holding a referendum.
