March Academy off to winning start with Wimblington derby win
Fenland teams returned to competitive action for the first time this calendar year this afternoon when they took part in the group stages of competitions organised after their 2020/21 campaigns were curtailed due to Covid-19 lockdown.
Both the Cambridgeshire County League and the Peterborough and District League have set up competitions where teams battle in group stages before the format goes into knockout contests.
In the Cambridgeshire County League Senior Cup, Wisbech St Mary Reserves went down to a narrow 1-0 home defeat to Bluntisham Rangers.
In the Intermediate Cup, March Academy got off to a winning start with a 2-1 home win against Wimblington, Cable and Gallagher on target for the home side and Damo Shailes getting one back for Wimblington after playing in goal during the first half.
In the game covered by our photographer today Benwick Athletic and Guyhirn shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw, Dillon Stevens on target for Athletic.
In the Junior Cup, Doddington United Reserves were beaten 3-1 at home to Guyhirn Reserves and Fen Tigers Engineers were 3-1 home victors against Benwick Athletic Reserves, with Jack Rudkin, George Terry and Ash Howlett on target for Engineers and Daniel Blake netting for Athletic.
March Academy Reserves lost 4-0 at home to Christchurch Magpies.
In the Peterborough Senior Cup, Long Sutton Athletic didn't get off to the best of starts as they crashed 4-0 at Oundle Town, and Leverington Sports were defeated at home, 4-1 to Thorpe Wood Rangers, Jordan Webb scoring for the home team.
There was an encouraging result for Tydd, however, as they secured a 1-1 draw at Pinchbeck United Reserves. Pinchbeck opened the scoring from a controversial penalty after 20 minutes and the visitors were reduced to ten men after a contentious sending off three minutes later.
But they laid siege to the home side's goal for rest of the match and scored with the last action of the match, a 93rd minute Ryan Ingle header.
Long Sutton Athletic Reserves were beaten 2-1 at home to Leverington Sports' second string in the Peterborough Junior Cup. Declan Foster and Dale Browne netted for Sports.
In the same competition, there was also defeat for Wisbech Town Reserves, who went down 5-2 at Ramsey Town, while Tydd Reserves were beaten 3-1 at Stilton United Reserves, Ben Arnold scoring from a terrific free kick.
In the Peterborough Minor Cup, Liam Bills and Joseph Sutton were on target for Sutton Bridge United, but they went down 3-2 at home to Deeping United Reserves. The result of the game between Hampton A and Long Sutton Athletic A is not yet in.
In the North West Norfolk League George Graver Cup, Marshland St James beat Gayton United A 3-0 with goals from Charlie Dungey, Dave Abbott Jack Cropley. Upwell Town beat Denver 2-0.
In the Charlie Day Cup, Marshland Saints Reserves lost 3-2 at The Woottons after conceding a sloppy goal from a corner two minutes from time. Ivan Crisp and Callum Rodgers scored for Saints.
