What a difference a few days of really warm weather has made, the weekend saw more anglers out on the banks of our local waters than has been seen for a very long time.

Unfortunately the fish were more intent on spawning than eating although there were some very good weights recorded in some matches.

Pick of the bunch has to be the catch taken by March rod Alex Bates in the John Garner Invitation event that took place on the Six Island pool on the Decoy Complex.

Alex drew well on peg 18 but fished well to demolish the strong field with a fine 200lb 5 ½ oz weight all taken on luncheon meat from the margins. Darren Page claimed the runner-up spot with 116lb 4oz, all carp caught up in the water followed by Tim Bates with 94lb 9 ½ oz and Mel Lutkin with 93lb 5oz.

Records tumbled at Townsend Lakes fishery on Sunday, venue expert Ricky Young putting a massive 241lb 2oz to the scales all taken on pellet from peg 20. Dave Lee second on 119lb followed by Steve Sharpe with 117lb 6oz.

Buttonhole Fishery

In the Tuesday evening match Les Barry took the honours fishing a pellet waggler from peg 20, netting a level 80lb on pellet. Runner-up with 71lb 7oz was Sammy McSpadden followed by Bob Bates on 66lb 5oz.

On Saturday it was the turn of Stickleback AC and some very respectable weights were recorded topped by Steve Bubeck. He fished pole and pellet on peg 9 netting 224lb. Paul Abutt came in second on 166lb 6oz followed by Ady Terheege with 66lb 4oz.

Fishery boss Richard Button rounded the week’s action off with a match win on his home water putting 190lb 14oz to the scales in Sunday’s Buttonhole Qualifier. Andy Lawrence came in second on 188lb 14oz followed by Andy Carter with 137lb 8oz.

In the Headfen Masters Qualifier Dave Priestley led the field home with 123lb 4oz from peg 12 on the Snake Pool, catching the majority of his fish in the margins on red maggot. Dave Rodwell came second on 90lb 2oz followed by Matt Ayers with 70lb 14oz.

North View Fishery

A couple of our local teams paid this ever improving Gedney Hills fishery a visit last week. First up were Townsend AC, they found the going quite tough at times as the fish were spawning in the reeds and rushes for part of the day.

Match winner Martin Kirk produced a weight of 65lb 11oz fishing paste over pellet down the edge. Runner-up was Albert Hawkins he opted for a maggot feeder fishing to the island, this produced 61lb 10oz of carp and in third place was Martin King fishing the pole at eight metres in open water and using the margins later in the day to finish on 50lb.

Surprise of the day was a 7lb 12oz barbel caught by Andrew Jordan, one of the biggest barbel taken from the fishery so far this year.

Metal Box AC

It looks as if a few more fish were willing to feed at North View judging by their excellent results sheet. Jim Allen was in the winner’s berth with a weight of 138lb 9oz, he fished a Method feeder tight to the island from permanent peg 8 with a groundbait feeder and luncheon meat on the hook. Runner-up with a weight of 120lb 11oz was Tony Campion, followed by Roger Archer on 119lb 3oz.

Spratt’s AC

In the latest club match on Fields End Water Fishery at Doddington Trevor Cousins was way out in front with a fine 102lb taken from peg 2 on a pellet waggler. Ellis Buddle came in second with 64lb 4oz followed by John Retchless with a level 61lb.

Willowcroft Fishery

Big fish anglers again recorded some excellent sport, with lots of big carp taken as they really come onto the feed. Perhaps the best fish taken recently though was a massive catfish going to the scales at 53lb. The fish was taken by Nick Wrench from swim eight at the fishery during the day.
