Despite the changeable weather conditions over the past couple of weekends more and more anglers seem to be getting out onto local waters with both Townsend Lakes and Buttonhole Fishery drawing in good numbers, writes Ken Wade.

At Buttonhole John Bates took the top spot in one of the matches, fishing a straight lead and sweetcorn on peg 20 for 120lb. Not far behind was Danny Button on peg 14, he opted for a paste and long pole approach to put 110lb 11oz to the scales followed by Joe Roberts with 108lb10oz.

In the Tuesday evening match Button kept up his consistent run of form, fishing cat meat close in on peg 9 for 117lb 12oz.

Runner-up Andrew Carter fished up in the water on peg 20 for 108lb 6oz; third on 92lb 6oz was Mark Grange.

At the fishery on Sunday Matt Aires took the honours from peg 20. In windy conditions he opted for the feeder approach netting carp to double figures for 111lb 6oz. Spalding rod Tom Wilson took second, again on the feeder, on 96lb 10oz followed by Carter with 83lb 6oz.

Townsend Lakes looks to be back in full swing with several matches to report on. The Kingfisher Lake saw Colin Begbie topping the list with 41lb 7oz, then came Barry Stacey with 26lb 4oz and Robert Betts with 21lb 5oz.

On the Cuckoo Canal Pool the water looks to be getting back to normal with some impressive weights recorded, Ricky Young taking the honours with 143lb 10oz. Ashley Kinsley second on 118lb 14oz, Ricky James third 106lb 8oz.

The match on the Woodpecker Pool on Sunday saw Kinsey in pole position. He drew peg 20 and took a mixed bag on the pole with pellet for 70lb 8oz. Runner-up was Begbie, he fished the long pole with pellet and also caught on corn over caster in the margins for 64lb 4oz. Third was Shaun Greatbatch 63lb 8oz.

Metal Box fished their latest match at Townsend on the Woodpecker Pool. They were greeted by high winds and driving rain, but thankfully the water fished well with some respectable weights recorded. Winner was Richard Deller recording his first ever match win, with a weight of 65lb. Richard drew peg 5 and fished dead maggot hook baits and fed 2ml pellets close in under the tree to land carp and barbel to 4lb. Runner-up Tony Campion weighed in 51lb with Roger Archer third on 45lb.

Spratt’s AC were back on the Decoy Complex fishing the productive Horseshoe Pool. Top rod with 121lb 9oz was Mick Raby, he drew peg 6 and caught all day in the margins, catching small carp and the occasional better fish to 5lb. Runner-up on peg 13 was Trevor Cousins. He opted for a pellet waggler approach and then fished the margins late on for 105lb 6oz. Third with a level 94lb was Mac Campbell fishing meat close in on peg 4.

It was difficult for Fenland Rod anglers fishing the Magpie Pool at Pidley on the Rookery Farm complex as the wind and rain swept across the fens. Campbell is having a very good start to the season. In this match he drew peg 9 which was in fact the end peg.

Fishing close in due to the wind, on his usual small pieces of luncheon meat, he put a winning weight of 112lb 7oz to the scales. Not far behind on peg 10 was Tim Bates, also on luncheon meat, 102lb 4oz. Third Kev Lee 92lb 5oz.

This weekend Fenland Rods are on the Willow Pool at Decoy.
