THE weather has once again been very kind to us over the past week and the carp have been fooled into thinking summer has come early judging by the tremendous sport we have enjoyed.
All our local waters have been in tip-top form, with huge weights being recorded from matches and pleasure catches too.
One water well worth an extra mention is Button Hole Fishery at Marshland St James on the outskirts of Wisbech. Regular evening matches on a Tuesday night have been running for some time now with some very impressive weights, topped recently by Les Barry who put 128lb 13oz to the scales.
That was topped last Saturday with the top five anglers all breaking into three figures, Martin Freeman running out a comfortable winner with 154lb 9oz. Once the fish are feeding close to the surface on a regular basis and the big fish want to feed, then I would not be surprised to hear of 200lb being taken.
The lake is ideal for the pleasure angler of all ages, the more serious anglers looking for a cracking day’s action or indeed for the area’s matchmen.
If you do run a club in the area then I can thoroughly recommend this fishery.

Kingsland Large Carp Lake lived up to its name as being a big fish water recently. In the Spratt’s AC match on the venue quite a few double figure carp were taken, including fish to 15lb.
Top rod from peg 13 was Colin Varney, he fished the pellet long and meat short to record 87lb 8oz.
Runner up was Martin Parker on the method feeder and rod and line in the margins, weighing in a level 80lb, followed by Trev Cousins with 60lb.
A good turnout for the Thursday Open match at Rookery Farm Fishery on the Jay Lake saw Pete Holland run out a comfortable winner. He broke the lake record, 137lb 1oz, fished up in the water on peg 34 netting carp to 3lb.
In second place was Graham Welton on 95lb 3oz, followed by Josh Pace with 94lb 8oz. This week’s match is on the early pegs and Roy Whincup is also running a match on Friday using pegs 6 to 36.
Some really big fish have been taken recently from the Willowcroft Fishery at Wisbech St Mary, plenty of carp well past the 20lb mark have been recorded along with big catfish.
Local rod Tommy Jolly decided he was going to do a night session with a difference, he went stalking his prey. For a bet he was dared to wear tiger pyjamas all night. He still came up trumps, though, bagging a big “cat” just before daylight.
Elm Pool on the Decoy complex has been a happy hunting ground for the Fenland Rods over the past few years and on Sunday once again it produced the goods. Tim Bates and Kev Lee fished opposite each other and had a running battle for the top spot all day.
Tim came out on top fishing pellet close in to weigh 197lb 14oz. Kev came second on 171lb 12oz followed by Kevin Beavis on 95lb 5oz. This weekend’s match is on the old match lake at the North View Fishery.
Several March anglers had an invitation to fish a popular Silver Fish pool at Clavering, Norfolk, last weekend by the local club, but had the shock of their lives when they found out all they could catch were carp!
Thankfully March tackle dealer Pete Rayner always carries much too much bait and they romped home, taking the top four places.
Pete led the way with 78lb 10oz, followed by Mark Carter with 50lb, Pete Carter with 46lb and Des Proud on 42lb 4oz and not a single roach or skimmer in sight!
If you are looking for a new club then the Golden Lion AC could well be the one for you. Their season gets under way this weekend with a match at Headfen Fishery.
They alternate between Saturdays and Sundays with most matches on our local commercial waters. Give Paul a call on 07840270874 for fixtures, etc.
