It’s handy for Andy

THE much milder weather of late saw quite a few more anglers out and about over last weekend, but what a pity the wind was so rough making bait presentation really difficult.

One angler who had no problems at all was Andrew Spence who had by far the best catch of the weekend netting a massive 45lb 10oz net of fish from the North Level Drain at Clough in Sunday’s Tydd Gote match.

Andrew fished a chopped worm and caster approach taking seven tench, a few skimmers and around 20lb of perch.

Colin Gibson came in second with 8lb 12oz followed by Sammy McSpadden with 6lb 1oz.

Anglers fishing the North Level Open Pike Championship at French Drove found lots of pike willing to feed in the mild if windy conditions. Top rod in this one was Andy McClagish, who put eight pike to the scales the biggest weighing in at 11lb 8oz for a total of 52lb 1oz. Rob Wright was second with 11 small pike for 40lb 12oz followed by Brian Hunn on 33lb 9oz.

Chatteris WMC

At long last the tiny Horseway Sluice drain has started to show some good form and in the final round of the Chatteris Workingmen’s club winter series there were bites to be had all day for most of the anglers competing.

Top rod in the last match of the series was Neil Newby, who put a fine 11lb 7oz net of roach, skimmers and perch to the scales to see off the strong challenge of runner-up Ian Warby who finished on 10lb 3oz. Third place went to Steve Newell on a level 8lb.

At the final count-back of points gained over the series it was Ian Warby who came out on top scoring 97 points just ahead of Steve Newell who had 93 points.

This coming weekend the club will be running a pike match on their waters; Steve Newell will be running the event which should see plenty of predator action.

You can call Steve on 01354 655347 for all the details and to get booked in.

Townsend AC had a really good turnout on Sunday when they fished the Decoy Lakes complex. Fishing both the Six Island and Four Island Pools the match was spoilt by the extremely strong winds we had to endure throughout the weekend.

Top rod from the more sheltered Four Island Pool was Pete Rayner, as he took a net of small carp on the pole fishing worm, caster and red maggot. Dave Burns came in second, he drew on Six Islands and weighed in 31lb 13oz followed by Dave Kirk with 30lb 6oz.

Conditions were much the same at Townsend Lakes but thankfully the Cuckoo Canal Pool produced some cracking action topped by Lee Morley, who drew peg 19 and took a net of carp on soft pellet and maggot putting a fine 86lb 7oz to the scales. Dave Rodwell came in second with 66lb 3oz followed by Geoff Arnold on 46lb 3oz.

Sunday’s match saw anglers on the Kingfisher Pool, Benwick-based angler Rob Hewison taking the top spot from peg 26 with a net of rudd and roach fished on the short pole line weighing 32lb 15oz. This was a really close match as runner-up Andy Adams fell just short, putting 32lb 6oz to the scales fishing the long pole with small soft pellet followed by John Price with 22lb 9oz.

The fishery has once again got two matches organised for this coming weekend, Saturday’s open match will be on the Kingfisher Pool followed on Sunday with a match on the Cuckoo Pool Bourne League

The big Bourne League which features one or two of our local teams decided to leave the area and travel up to Westwood Lakes at Boston for round three of the winter series, a strange decision with so many stillwaters in this area they could have fished. But with a couple of Boston teams in the league and quite a few anglers fishing that live north of our area I can see the logic - just.

Parson Drove angler and match organiser John Spalton took the top spot in this match fished on several of the lakes. The Maver Bait Tech rod fished the 13 metre line with soft pellet taking a net of small carp and barbel for 32lb 14oz.

On the team front it was Maver Fox that took the honours and they now hold a two-point lead over their nearest rivals Maver Bait Tech.

Result: 1 J Spalton, Maver Bait Tech, 32lb 14oz; 2 J Taylor, Sensas Mark One, 31lb 2oz; 3 A Ogilvie, Maver Bait Tech, 28lb 5oz; 4 C Jenkinson, Maver Bait Tech, 26lb 8oz; 5 S Lamington, Boston, 24lb 5oz; 6 G Butler, Maver Bait Tech, 24lb 2oz.

Teams: 1 Maver Fox, 13pts; jt 2 Maver Bait Tech Black and Odds and Sods, 19; 4 Mark One White, 23; 5 Maver Bait Tech Green, 24; 6 Garbolino Peterborough, 25.

League: 1 Maver Fox, 6pts; 2 Maver Bait Tech Black, 8; 3 Maver Bait Tech Green, 11; jt 4 Garbolino Peterborough, Sensas Mark One Black, both 15.
