Wet and windy conditions right across the area saw a few matches cancelled whilst those that did take place were badly affected.
The East Midland Angling Trust winter league practice fished on the North Level Drain at Tydd Gote was one of several with attendances well down, and with anglers struggling to present a bait with any degree of competence, weights were considerably down.
Top rod with a modest 9lb 7oz net of skimmers and roach was Phil Chesterton, he drew peg 74 at Harrolds Bridge and fished red maggot over groundbait. Runner-up was Spike Milligan on peg 51 and fishing a chopped worm and caster approach, taking a good bream along with a few skimmers for 6lb 12oz. Third place went to Alex Bates with 6lb 9oz followed by Stan Binge on 6lb 2oz.
Judging by the result, if the weather does not improve quite a few of the competitors in this weeks round two match on the same venue could well struggle to put a decent weight to the scales.
Top rod in the latest Townsend Lakes open was local rod Ashley Kinsey, he put 62lb 7oz to the scales from peg 15. Ashley fished the pole and pellet catching a bonus carp of 14lb late on in the match with maggot. Runner-up was Colin Begbie, he fished the pole with pellet and sweetcorn over a bed of casters for 51lb 13oz followed by Steve Sharpe with 23lb 14oz.
In the Tydd Gote Wednesday match held at Black Dyke it was Alec Rawlings taking the honours with 10lb 4oz. His catch included two good tench together with a net of skimmers taken on the waggler with red maggot. Runner-up with 8lb was David Parlett, followed by Alex Bates with 8lb 8oz.
Sundays match also held at Black Dyke saw David Parlett in pole position thanks to a net of roach and skimmers taken on the pole with red maggot for 6lb 12oz. Second place went to Andrew Goodger with 5lb 12oz followed by Dick Paul on 3lb 1oz.
The weather certainly affected Sundays A.T. Pike Qualifier held at Clough, this match usually produces some cracking action but at the weigh in Ken Edgson topped the list with a brace of pike weighing a total of 18lb 6oz. John Watson came second with a single fish weighing 5lb 8oz followed by Robert Hurst and Jamie Cooper who both had a fish for 4lb 14oz.
Fixtures: Sunday and Wednesday matches at Black Dyke, draw at 9am, fish 10-3.
Last Tuesday sadly the club’s eldest Honorary Life Member Ron Goodger passed away, he was 88 and had in the past served on the committee for many years.
There was no match for Chatteris WMC angling section at the weekend, the next will be on Sunday at “Bulls Mill” draw at 8am, and due to a weed problem, at “Horseway” the Winter Series will now commence on Sunday, November 3.
Spratt’s Angling club match fished on the Yew Lake at Decoy Lakes: Mac Campbell was well out in front, putting a fine 117lb 15oz to the scales. Mac drew peg 15 and caught on meat and pellet netting carp to 8lb. Runner-up Mick Raby fished close in with meat to finish with 91lb 12oz, Peter Parlett 91lb 10oz.
Metal Box fished a pairs event at Decoy Lakes on the ever popular Beastie Lake. Winner Richard Morris did not have a partner and so doubled his weight from 33lb 10lb to 67lb 4oz. Second pair were Philip Allen and Rodney Melnyk on 62lb 13oz, with Ellis Buddle and Shaun Buddle third with 56lb 15oz. Singles: Peter Harrod 53lb 1oz, Jim Allen 39lb, Rodney Melnyk 36lb.
