The Sensas Challenge could well have been one of the best matches of the weekend but teams pulling out of the event at the last minute meant that it was mostly locals competing against each other and the attendance was well down, writes Ken Wade.
Nevertheless the venue fished well with most anglers catching roach.
Top rod was Sensas Mark One angler John Taylor.
He fished the long pole with bloodworm fished over ground bait full of joker feed to put a very respectable 13lb 15oz to the scales. Then came Mick Asker on 12lb 9oz, followed by John Bates with 10lb 9oz.
Top team on the day were Sensas Mark One White, further qualifiers for the final were the Black and Gold Mark One sides with Browning Hotrods from Huntingdon just missing out.
John Taylor has been in fine form of late, on Saturday he made the frame in the big River Yare match and continues to do really well in the local Tydd Gote matches.
On Wednesday he won the club match on the North Level Drain with 8lb 5oz of roach and small skimmers.
Then came John Young on 5lb 8oz with Rob Wright third on 5lb 5oz. On Sunday it was Colin Tenounce out in front, he weighed in 7lb 2oz followed by Andy Greenwood with 5lb 15oz and Graham Barry with 3lb 8oz.
Rookery Waters Fishery had an off day at the weekend when Fenland Rods fished their weekly fixture.
The Jay Lake was expected to produce good nets but for most of the match anglers struggled to get a bite, let alone put a winning weight together.
There has to be a winner though no matter how disappointing the fishing is and, in the last two hours, Mac Campbell managed to find a few carp on small pieces of luncheon meat close in to put 43lb 1oz to the scales.
In second place was Dave Garner. He too had only a couple of fish until the last two hours, but again caught late on luncheon meat for 41lb 2oz, followed by Les Bedford on 38lb 14oz.
Next week the club will be on the Magpie Pool at Pidley which should see a vast improvement.
In the Saturday open on the Magpie Pool at Rookery Waters Tony Dawson put an impressive 235lb 12oz winning bag onto the scales from peg 34. He fished sweetcorn in the margins, netting carp to 8lb.
Second place went to Graham Welton.
He started on the Method feeder before switching to his margins with maggots to finish with 216lb, then came Kevin Peacock on 149lb 8oz.
Kevin had better luck in the Wednesday’s over 60’s open on the Rook Lake.
He fished a slow sinking bomb and paste in the margins late on to catch carp to 4lb from peg 10 for a level 71lb.
Runner-up on 50lb 4oz was Ray Pullman, followed by Keith Rayment on 49lb 10oz.
The Woodpecker Pool was the venue for the latest Townsend Lakes open match at the weekend which saw Sam Hawkes out in front, fishing the long pole with pellet to finish on 78lb 10oz.
Runner-up with 63lb 8oz was Colin Begbie.
He caught on the pole with pellet and also took some better fish from the margins on meat.
Third place went to Steven Hillman on 46lb 7oz.
