Best result left until last round

The final round of the Drennan Pairs match saw the best result of the series despite winter continuing to disrupt angling right across the area, writes Ken Wade.

Out in front on the River Welland through Spalding was Dave Thornton. He drew one of the fancied pegs close to the town bridge and took a net of roach weighing 23lb 11oz.

Second place went to in-form Joe Roberts with 22lb 15oz followed by Joe Oaks who weighed in 17lb 6oz. The River Glen proved a happy hunting ground for several of our local Sensas Mark One rods. John Price took the honours with 15lb 10oz followed closely by team mate Rob Hewison with 13lb 9oz.

Third place went to Cameron Hughes who put 12lb 2oz to the scales. Top pairs on the day were Dale Stones and Dave Thornton with 33lb 13oz. The consistent duo of Mark Pollard and Lee Klimczuk took the overall league title with a total weight of 110lb 14oz. Runners-up were Joe Roberts and Joff Woodgett with 99lb 2oz and then came local anglers Paul Spriggs and Martin Roper with 93lb 4oz. Thanks should go to Wayne Swinscoe for running the event and a special mention to Drennan International the tackle company that backed this popular event.

A slighter smaller field than expected fished the final round of the Stanjay winter series on the Factory Bank at Ramsey which saw the tiny drain produce some good winter sport despite a frosty start to the day. Top rod was Anthony Watling Jnr with 12lb taken on the whip with bread punch. Runner-up with 11lb 7oz was Lindsay Naylor, again a net of roach, followed by Graham Welton with 10lb. The overall winner of the four match series was March rod Rob Wright the only angler to win his section in all four matches, considering the conditions over the past few weeks that was an axcellent achievement.

In the pairs match fished on the Kingfisher and Woodpecker Pools at Townsend Fishery the cold weather and frozen lakes made fishing tough but with four section prizes and two lake winners and top two pairs being paid out it turned out to be a close event.

Overall winner on Kingfisher Lake was Bob Coulson with 23lb 2oz of skimmers on long pole and pellet. His partner Geoff Arnold on the Woodpecker pool also won his section with a 12lb 8oz silver fish net on the maggot giving a perfect two point score. Second placed pair was Dave Rodwell winning a tough section on Kingfisher Lake with 9lb 5oz, with mainly skimmers on the feeder, and his partner Dave Priestly jnr who managed 2nd in section on the Woodpecker Pool again fishing maggot, missing out to lake winner Ricky Young to finish on three points for second pair overall.

Woodpecker Pool winner Ricky Young caught 11lb of silvers and two bonus carp on the feeder to finish with 22lb.

Overall top three: 1 Bob Coulson, 23lb 2oz: 2 Sam Claydon, 22lb 12oz; 3 Ricky Young, 22lb

After the pairs the Cuckoo Canal Pool was used for the individual open match. As expected ice breaking delayed the start as surprisingly the usually productive venue was a little harder than normal but double figures were still needed to make the top ten.

Results: 1 Dave Rodwell an excellent 58lb 6oz from peg 16, he caught on the long pole fishing pellet down the middle; 2 from the next peg Andy Adams with 46lb 8oz; 3 Robert Walton with 36lb 2oz.
