March Town Ladies 9, Histon Ladies 1 (Cambs League Division One)

The Hares started their campaign with a big win on Sunday. Histon took an early lead and home keeper Peggy Thurlby also made a low save before the Hares picked up the pace.

Liv Holden played a great ball through to Abby Grist who hit a first time shot into the far corner.

On 40 minutes, another through ball was dispatched by Eleanor McLeish with a cool finish.

Histon had some good opportunities to equalise, but on the stroke of half time, an excellent Lexi Waters free kick was volleyed in by McLeish.

The Hares were much stronger in the second half with goals in quick succession. Grist beat the keeper with a one on one and McLeish completed her hat-trick with a close range shot.

Freeman’s powerful header set up Grist for her hat-trick, and she soon hit a fourth with the outside of her foot into the top corner.

Then 16-year-old Cassie Houghton scored two late goals.

Coach Gary Davis was pleased with the performance and said: “We just clicked in the second half and despite missing most of our midfield, our players dealt well with the challenge of playing out of position.

“I was particularly pleased with Cassie, who is only 16 and after making her adult debut in the FA Cup, scored twice on her league debut.”
