Three second half goals decided the game in the Fenmen’s favour on Saturday in the ChromaSport & Trophies UCL Premier Division.

Wisbech manager Dick Creasey praised the resilience of his troops in a game which required more graft than craft on a heavy pitch.

The Fenmen took control with goals from Matt Lunn and Steven Reid (2) to secure a hard-fought win when paying a first-ever visit to Freeway Park.

It means Wisbech continue to keep in touch with the leading pack, while it was a happy weekend for evergreen defender Scott Johnson whose 37th birthday was on Sunday.

Creasey said: “The pitch was very difficult; very sticky and heavy.

“They were a typical UCL side: get it forward early, but we coped with it.

“In the second half we heaped on a little bit of pressure and they broke, which we thought they would do. I’m delighted with it.

“A year ago we would have lost there but now we have got the mentality right.

“That typified it on Saturday. The pretty players we have got are a good thing when the pitches are good.

“Sometimes during this period you need your workers to get you through. Now we can mix it up.

“Last year when I came back to the club to help Paul Cousins and Scott Johnson I said we had too many ‘footballers’.”

He added on midfielder Reid: “I was pleased for Reidy that he got a double.

“He gave 100 per cent when things were not working out for him over the last four or five games.

“Milly’s (Adam Millson) been coming up with the goals. If Reidy can join in, then we’ve got goals from all over the pitch.”

Creasey hopes to maintain their recent run of good form next Saturday when Wisbech travel to basement side Long Buckby AFC.

Tuesday sees the Fenmen go to another lower-table side, Sleaford Town.

Wisbech: Jordan, Johnson, Spafford, Wilson, Horne, Smith (Bishop), Reid, Millson, Lunn (Cobb), Treacher, Beaumont (Ford). Sub not used: Fairweather.
