March Bears were very proud after they recorded a hard-fought 31-12 victory over Ely II at the weekend.

Against a much larger side who had been unbeaten in the league, they put in a brilliant performance at Elm Road on Saturday.

With a series of good results lately, March’s confidence continues to grow with some robust loose play alongside some incisive running from their young set of backs.

Ely suffered an early set back when one of their two locks was injured and had to go off after just five minutes

March’s first score came after a poor clearance by Ely in the 13th minute, with a movement from 12 to 9 by the March backs seeing Munro go over near the posts. Brookes converted making, the score 7-0

Kupyn then was sin binned for a high tackle after 23 minutes, but this only energised March with Ryan going over for an unconverted try to take it to 12-0.

Kupyn then made amends for his sin bin by crashing over for another try in the 37th minute.

The sides entered the half-time break with the score still at 17-0 in favour of March.

The second half started with a try in the 47th minute for Ely; if it had been scored in a football game, it would have been described as a goal mouth scramble.

Conway then showed a great piece of individual skill and power in the 59th minute to take the score to 24-5 after Brookes converted the try.

Seven minutes later Munro, after a kick through, picked up the ball expertly and dove over the line for March’s final try converted to make it 31-5.

In the last 5 minutes Ely were then awarded a penalty try under the sticks when it was adjudged that March had twice deliberately taken the scrum down near their own line, but this did little to stop March’s jubilation at the final whistle with a very good 31-12 win.
