Wisbech Town goalkeeper Aaron Butcher spoke of his delight after helping the Fenmen through to the next stage of the UCL Knockout Cup.

Butcher was one of the heroes in a penalty shoot-out, scoring one spot-kick and saving another as Wisbech progressed 5-4 on penalties against league leaders Leicester Nirvana.

All this came after Butcher kept a rare clean sheet during a goalless draw after extra-time.

Butcher said: “The most challenging thing today was probably the conditions and I thought it was a game of two halves. I felt we dealt with everything which Leicester threw at us in the first half and we were happy to go into the break at 0-0. They didn’t really hurt us after the break.”

On the shoot-out, Butcher said: “Through previous clubs I quite fancied myself when it came to penalties, saving them that is.

“Brett asked if I wanted to take one as I have taken them for him before. I said I’d take the fifth one and scored.

“Luckily the next one I saved and Jonno slotted the winning penalty away.”

Last night, the Fenmen were due to host Soham Town Rangers in the Cambs Invitation Cup and on Saturday they travel to Desborough in the league.

On Saturday’s victory, manager Brett Whaley said: “I think last week as a group we were massively disappointing.

“We didn’t play that well against Leicester Nirvana but the difference today is that we showed some fight.

“They were difficult to break down and the wind did nullify the game. Neiher side caused each other too many problems but I thought we played better against the wind than they did.

“The downside is that we didn’t score again but the fact of the matter is that we needed a performance as a team.

“When you want to turn around form and get some confidence you need to do it as a group.

“On Saturday we did really well and defensively I thought we were excellent.”
