There was plenty of success for Wisbech drivers at the Adrian Flux Arena at King’s Lynn last Saturday.

The main race of the night was the English Championship for Junior Bangers which saw the most drivers that have ever been seen for this formula at King’s Lynn.

In a very hard fought race and following a fantastic drive, 13-year-old Wayne Cottrill drove a composed race to take the title – surviving the pressure of three restarts in the last five laps. In second place was Ryan Jones (Lymington) with Harry Steward (Great Bromley) third. There was more success later in the night for local juniors when Jake Beasley picked a great time to take his first ever race win in the first all comers race after Owen Ketteringham had earlier qualified for the championship with a seventh place finish in the Last Chance Race.

Cottrill (pictured) later appeared with his roof already painted with the St George’s Cross which denotes the English champion and raced from the back of the grid to finish in third in the second All Comer race.

The 2L Stock Cars where Wisbech used to be such a hotbed of local talent continued the local resurgence of interest with two drivers who have moved into the formula in 2015 taking the plaudits. Earlier in the meeting former banger star Max Stott took his first win in the formula in the first heat with Jake Swann (March), Ivan Street (Somersham) and 16 year old Marcus Skeels completing the top four. Skeels continued to impress later in the meeting when he finished in a fantastic runner up place in the meeting final to Casey Englestone (Norwich). Skeels led the final for the majority of the race and kept his composure when the big boys came into the picture and showed himself to not respect reputations with an audacious move which saw him re-inherit second place on the last bend of the race after putting in a big hit on moving World Champion David Aldous wide.

Racing returns to Lynn on Sunday, May 16 (6pm) when local banger star Michael “Bandit” Bailey is remembered.
