March Town failed to make it three wins on the trot during searing heat as Histon at The Avenue prevailed by 96 runs in Whitings League Division 1.

Sri Lankan all-rounder Saranga Rajaguru cracked an unbeaten 104 – his third ton of the season and his best on a Saturday – as March chased a massive 297-5 posted by the third-placed and in-form visitors. The left-hander struck 17 boundaries, five of which were six, as his runs came off just 96 balls.

Rajaguru figured in a last-wicket stand of 50 off 57 deliveries, as a fine 18 not out from vice-captain Andy Wright boosted the total to 201-9 and an eight point haul to keep them in mid-table.

March will claim they didn't get the rub of the green. They started well with an opening stand of 45 but were 80-6.

Things had started well for the home side when Wright took an early wicket, but on a flat track it was a day for batsmen.

Histon 297-5, 50 overs (Wright 3-38), March 1st XI 201-9, 50 overs (Rajaguru 104no, Adam Conyard 21, Wright 18no, Udana Ranathunga 18).

The Sunday 1st XI lost by 14 runs at bottom club Oundle Town in Rutland League Division 1.

Chasing what seemed a modest 169-9, March were dismissed for just 155, with the ever-improving Jacob Gray top-scoring with 29.

Earlier, occasional bowler Ben Chapman popped up with a five wicket haul. The former first choice wicketkeeper, until he broke a finger, took 5-36 – career best figures at this level.

Oundle 169-9, 45 overs (Ben Chapman 5-36, Saranga Rajaguru 2-14), March 1st XI 155 all out, 40.1 (Jacob Gray 29, Brandon Phillips 27, Alex Oldham 23). Man of the Match: Ben Chapman.
