Rob Moden (28) and Ben Pyle (21) fifth wicket stand of 39 vital when chasing modest target

By Pete Woodhouse

A six-wicket haul from all-rounder Saranga Rajaguru sent March Town into second spot in Rutland League Division One on Sunday.

The leg-spinning Sri Lankan set up his side’s four wicket win at The Avenue against Grantham with a stunning 6-19 spell, after the visitors had cruised to 112-2.

Vice-captain Sam Clarke had removed both openers as he and Ben Pyle pegged the free-scoring visitors back.

Pyle snapped up an excellent catch as did Rob Moden, in the Grantham total of 139.

Moden (28) and Pyle (21) then produced a disciplined fifth wicket stand of 39, which was crucial when chasing the modest target.

James Skillen hit an unbeaten 22 on his debut as the runs came up with just under three overs to spare.

Grantham 139 all out, 40.1 overs (Saranga Rajaguru 6-19, Sam Clarke 2-41), March 1st XI 142-6, 42.1 overs (Rob Moden 28, James Skillen 22, Ben Pyle 21, Saranga Rajaguru 21).

Man of the Match: Saranga Rajaguru.
