Wisbech Wheelers cycling veterans Becky Taylor, Denese Hallahan and Roger Sewell excel in National '10' & 30-miler

By Pete Woodhouse

Two Wisbech lady cycling veterans threw their hat into the ring on Saturday in the National 10-mile Championships held on the Newmarket course.

Top Wisbech lady vet. Becky Taylor was unable to repeat her bronze medal performance in the National 12-hour but still put in an excellent 22.02 at 6am, and prolific TT rider at 60-plus, Denese Hallahan was again willing to be measured against the best.

Remarkably 70-plus Roger Sewell (pictured), recovering from serious illness, bettered his time from his first 30-miler in 1966 by 20 seconds with 1.19.28.

At the last of the Wisbech evening races it was a battle of the Matthews. Mat Senter of Peterborough CC was hoping to take the course record but conditions were not in his favour and his 20.17 was 13 seconds outside last week’s record.

Wisbech Wheeler and triathlete, Mat McClure, took second in 21.24; and with the TAAP Cervelo team, Mat Webster visited his old club and bagged a sub 22-minute ride on a road bike despite at a roundabout a car almost ending his professional career

Jemma Redhead was disappointed not to finish with another pb but had a string of improvements in her first season.
