Cambridgeshire rise above visitors in the table with just the final matches on April 27/28 to be played
The weekend saw Cambridgeshire face Dorset in the British Inter-County Championship Division 1 match at the GER Sports Club, March, writes Peter Melton.
Cambs went into the match one point behind Dorset, needing a victory to see Cambs climb above them in the table as they fight to gain a top two finish and promotion to the Premier Division.
Saturday saw the Ladies' B team lose 2-4 and the Men's B team win 8-4 to give Cambs an overall 10-8 lead going into Sunday's A team matches. The Men B won which also puts them top of their table with just one match to go.
Sunday started with a 2-4 defeat for Cambs Ladies and left the score at 12-12 overall, so the Men knew they needed a win to clinch the three bonus points that would lift Cambs above Dorset.
As expected the match was a close run affair and it eventually went to the final leg of the weekend and fortunately for the hosts Matt Wing hit the winning double that meant the team had won 7-5 and the overall score with the bonus points was: Cambridgeshire 22 Dorset 17.
When the other results came in Cambs had risen to third in the table with just the final matches on April 27/28 to be played.
It is sure to be a nerve wracking final match with the top four teams still having a realistic chance of finishing in the top two promotion positions, especially as the current top two teams Cornwall and Devon play each other in a local derby final match.
Cambs travel to Gwent and Dorset face Oxfordshire.
