Wisbech 1st XV won at Thetford for the first time in ten years and recorded a vital second away victory of the season on Saturday.

Wisbech started in rampant fashion, and some deft handling in the midfield resulting in three quick tries in the first 15 minutes through Solomon Prestidge (2) & Kerrie McMullen.

Thetford hit back, with a penalty leaving the score 3-17 halfway through the first half.

Wisbech kept the pressure on and after a well-rehearsed oriental lineout move, Mark Goode powered over in the corner for yet another try.

Some lackadaisical defence allowed Thetford to score a breakaway try, but Wisbech hit straight back via a score from Frank Etherington to leave the scores 8-27 at the break.

Wisbech started the second half positively and the sleeker one of the Anderson brothers crashed over from short range to increase Wisbech's lead to 32-8.

Three unanswered breakaway tries from Thetford then reduced Wisbech's lead to a slender 27-32.

They regained some composure and added a further two tries through Ben Goode and Sam Anderson, with Sam Anderson converting twice.

A further Wisbech sinbin couldn’t stop The Men in Red closing the game out, with the final score 27-46 to the visitors.

1st XV Coach Gerhard Wessels said: "I am very proud of the way the boys responded to last week’s disappointing home defeat. If we ran into a wall, we did not turn around and give up. We figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”

Club Captain Dave Wadsley commented: "At times not always pretty but it's a fantastic result on the road, especially at Thetford where historically we have struggled.

"Everyone involved that travelled should be very proud, but now the focus shifts to this weekend"

Wisbech first XV host Norwich Union this week at Harecroft road while the Wildcats travel to Sawston, with both games at 2.15pm.
