The weather could have been a little kinder to us over the Easter period but, thankfully, catches have been very good, writes Ken Wade.

Better news for all you anglers out there too who have been waiting for the fishing to improve around the area as catches have been very good and can only get better, providing we can steer clear of frosts.

It was quite a busy weekend for clubs across the area fishing the first round of the Angling Times Bait Tech Knockout events.

On Saturday at the Rookery Waters fishery the Johnson Massey A Team beat Hadley APS 4-2 in the competition fished on the Magpie Lake. At the end of the match most thought it was going to be a draw, but they just managed to scrape home and through to the next round.

The winner from fancied peg 2 was Hadley angler John Eldred with 83lb 12oz, he caught steadily throughout the match.

Runner-up was Brian Newman with 46lb 6oz, followed by Steve Gwynne on 46lb 4oz.

There was a big turnout for the £1,000 qualifier open on the Jay Lake at Rookery Waters. The lake fished well in places and tricky in others.

The winner was local rod and venue regular John Price, the Sensas-backed rod drew favoured peg 11 and made no mistake fishing right across to the far bank and alternated between maggot and expander pellet over 2mm feed pellets for an all-carp catch of 76lb 12oz and booking his place in the August two-day final.

Josh Pace came in second with 61lb 8oz from peg 29, followed by Rob Wright with 56lb 8oz.

Next Saturday’s open will be on Magpie but, unfortunately, pegs will be limited so booking is essential. Contact Alex Bates 07824878492 to get booked in as soon possible.

The first Spratt’s AC of the season saw the club fishing the Cedar Pool on the Decoy complex.

Top rod from peg 4 was Terry Tribe. He started on the bomb with pellet then later switched to the pole with maggot to finish on 89lb 15oz.

Runner-up was Martin Parker on peg 10. He fished the feeder with sweetcorn and pellet for 63lb 9oz.

Paul Cousins came in third with 48lb 4oz, he caught on red maggot on a small feeder.
