March Town and Wisbech Town defeated on the road
It was a weekend as bleak as the weather for Fenland’s two most senior football teams as Wisbech Town and March Town both fell to defeat.
In the United Counties Premier South it was a second defeat on the bounce for March, who lost 3-1 at mid-table Hinckley Athletic.
The Hares led 1-0 at the break through Craig Gillies’ 13th goal of the season in the first minute. But Leo Ferruch levelled for newly-promoted Athletic halfway through the second period and two minutes later Bryan Kohyrelon made it 2-1 to the home side. A second for Kohyrelon secured the win.
Next Saturday, Ash Taylor’s men, who are now fourth and 12 points off joint-leaders St Neots Town and Aylestone Park, start a run of four home games on the trot before Christmas when they entertain struggling Bugbrooke St Michaels.
March: Gill, Saunders (Green), Brumby, Henderson (Burrows), Emmington, Foy, Cotton, Tait, Gillies, Allen (Biggs), Williams (Escorcio). Sub (not used): Pepper. Attendance: 67.
Over at Wisbech, the home side lost a United Counties Premier North relegation six-pointer 1-0 at home to Shirebrook Town, which leaves the Derbyshire side level on points with the fourth-from-bottom Fenmen. Luke Hipwell’s team are five points clear of former manager Brett Whaley’s Deeping Rangers, who are in the relegation area, but Wisbech have played three games more. The two sides meet at Market Deeping on Boxing Day.
Fabian Johnson scored the only goal of the game for Athletic this afternoon in the 31st minute, seconds after Wisbech had struck a post. The visitors finished the game with ten men after Jarvis Denham was dismissed for his second yellow card.
Wisbech: Lakin, Harris (Cavozzi), Wilson, Nicholson (Falcao), Mattless, Braham, Foster (Papworth-Boston), Williams, Conyard, Ward, Lennon. Subs (not used): Hoyle, Butcher. Attendance: 102.
Next Saturday, Wisbech travel to play 12th-place Ashby Ivanhoe.
Parson Drove, eighth in the Thurlow Nunn First Division North, were without a game this afternoon and are next in action on Wednesday when they entertain sixth-place FC Peterborough before travelling to play 14th-place Dussindale & Hellesdon Rovers next Saturday.
