Flying Flynn leads treble gold haul

Wisbech Inline Speed skaters travelled to Ipswich for their first races of 2015, joined by speed skaters from Birmingham, Ashbourne and Ipswich.

All racers struggled with lack of grip on track, with Masters competitor Barrie Wiles quipping that “throwing a banana skin on the track couldn’t make it any slippier!”

There were relatively few crashes but the pace was visibly slower. This didn’t stop Flynn McGurk from winning all four of his races in Category 3 and winning gold for the club, as did Glen Brown in the Masters category, with former champion Mike McInerney also collecting gold in Category 1.

Other race winners for the club included Ellie Sooley-Drew in Category 2 and Paige Wiles in the Rat races. Club members did exceptionally well in the Masters races where Brown, Barrie Wiles, David Billingham and Rob Wiles all finished in the top four in all four of their races.

Rob, having returned to competition recently, finished in second place in two races and earned a bronze medal. Barrie Wiles missed out on a medals position after a last race clash with team mate David Billingham.

The club are now preparing for their first home races of the year at their local roller skating rink, Skaters, in Walpole Highway on March 28 for the British Indoor Championships.

The medallists were: Flynn McGurk - Category 3 – Gold; Glen Brown – Masters – Gold; David Billingham – Masters – Silver; Rob Wiles – Masters – Bronze; Michael McInerney – Category 1 – Gold; Ellie Sooley-Drew – Category 2 – Silver.
