Newmarket Town 2, Wisbech Town 5
The Fenmen made it four successive wins this season and top the Ridgeons Premier Division but manager Steve Appleby was none too pleased with his side’s performance on last night (Wednesday).
They took a 3-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes with goals from Ollie Gale, Chris Bacon and Liam Nimmo but the home side pulled goal back before the break.
Callum Reed added a fourth goal six minutes into the second half, but Wisbech then let the Jockeys make it 4-2 before Steve Reid scored his first goal of the season to make it 3-2.
Appleby commented: “I am happy with the three points but not with the performance on the night. We were very good going forward and always looked like scoring but we gave away two sloppy goals and were all at sea at the back at times.
“It is a good start to the season but there is still some improvement to come and we need tighten up at the back.”
Defenders Anthony Reeve and Stacy Cartwright picked up knocks in the game, but Appleby is hopeful that they will be fit for Saturday’s trip to Clacton.
