Callum hits a cracker

Wisbech Town 2, Mildenhall 1

The Fenmen made it two wins from two games in the Ridgeons Premier Division with a dogged performance on Tuesday night at the Fenland Stadium.

There were no goals in the first 45 minutes but Callum Reed gave Wisbech the lead with a screaming shot from 25 yards out after 48 minutes after a quick break.

Chris Bacon scored his first league goal for the club after 64 minutes with a header at the near post from a Reed free kick. Three minutes later however the Wisbech defence was caught flat footed as Mildenhall substitute James McCabe made it 2-1.

Wisbech held on well for a well-deserved three points to put them second in the table and manager Steve Appleby commented: “We had a lot of near misses in the first half and you begin to wonder if they are going to come back and haunt you. But Callum has hit a cracking shot and Bacon rose well to head home a second goal.

“They got a goal back and came at us in the last 15 minutes but we showed the passion and desire to keep them out for a deserved win.”

Wisbech: Ryan Rayner, Neal Spafford, Anthony Reeve, Simon Ashton, Scott Johnson (Ollie Gale); Callum Reed (Lewis Thompson), Paul Jones, Steven Reid, Stacy Cartwright; Liam Nimmo, Chris Bacon (Nick Davey).
