Comfortable win for Wisbech Town

Wisbech Town 2, Mildenhall 1

The Fenmen made it two wins from two games in the Ridgeons Premier Division with a comfortable win on Tuesday night at the Fenland Stadium.

There were no goals in the first 45 minutes but Callum Reed gave Wisbech the lead with a screaming shot from 30 yards out after 48 minutes.

Chris Bacon scored his first league goal for the club after 64 minutes with a header from a free kick. Three minutes later however the Wisbech defence was caught flat footed as Mildenhall made it 2-1.

Wisbech held on well for a well-deserved three points to put them second in the table and manager Steve Appleby commented: “We had a lot of near misses in the first half and you begin to wonder if they going to come back and haunt you. But Callum has hit a cracking shot and the Bacon rose well to head home a second goal.

“They got a goal back and came at us in the last 15 minutes but we showed the passion and desire to keep them for a deserved win.”

Only setback for Wisbech was that Scott Johnson injured a knee and looks doubtful for Saturday’s FA Cup game against Halstead when Matty Lunn, Steve Reid and Lewis Thompson will also be missing

Chatteris Town lost their opening game of the season by 2-0 at home to Over Sports in the Cambs League Premier Division last night.

The Lilies went a goal down inside a minute and then conceded a second goal on the stroke of half-time.

They did better in the second half hitting the woodwork twice and manager Steve Taylor said: “It was a disappointing start but they finished second in the league last year.”
