Wisbech Town 1

THE Fenmen paid for their defensive errors with three goals as they slipped to a second successive Ridgeons Premier Division defeat on Saturday.

Rovers took the lead after 16 minutes in the first half after some sloppy defending.

But Wisbech were back on level terms a minute later when Matt Lunn played the ball across the face of the goal and Lewis Thompson scored with a tap-in from close range.

After the break though Paul Cousins tried to play his way out from the back and his pass was intercepted by a Stanway forward who then rounded Tom Roberts, making his debut in the Wisbech goal, before putting the ball in the net.

The third goal came when Cousins played a pass back to Roberts and his scuffed clearance fell to a Stanway player who dispatched the ball back into the Wisbech net.

Perhaps the turning point of the game came with the score at 2-1 when Wisbech had good claims for a penalty when Scott Johnson was pulled back in the box, but play was allowed to continue.

Wisbech boss Steve Appleby said: “We have been undone by three errors of our own. I have no complaints with the efforts of the players but things just do not seem to be going our way at the moment.

“Had the referee given what looked a blatant penalty who knows what would have happened but we just have to get on with it.”

Wisbech: Tom Roberts, Neal Spafford, Scott Johnson, Paul Cousins, Stacy Cartwright, Jon Fairweather, Adam Millson, Steven Reid, Chris Bacon, Lewis Thompson, Matt Lunn.
