Wisbech Town 2, Yaxley 0
The fabulous Fenmen humbled UCL leaders Yaxley with their fourth win on the spin at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium on Saturday.
The Peterborough side failed to register a single shot on target in the whole 90 minutes of the derby as the Fenmen stopped their eight-match winning run.
Josh Ford put the hosts ahead with a penalty after a trip on the same player. Matt Lunn scored the all-important second goal on 47 minutes.
Wisbech boss Dick Creasey said: “There’s a lot to be pleased with. We could have been out of sight by half-time.
“You or me could have played in goal: Lea Jordan had nothing to do. Although Yaxley were annoyed with the penalty, from where I am it’s a stone-waller.
“It was just the right time to score just before half-time. Two minutes into the second half we got the second goal, and that was it, really.”
Wisbech: Jordan, Fairweather, Spafford, Johnson, Horne, Cobb, Reid, Millson, Smith, Lunn (Beaumont 60), Ford. Subs not used: Cousins, Bishop, Wilson.
l Danny Beaumont and the rest of the bench – Paul Cousins, Nick Bishop and Luke Wilson – plus some reserve players were due to begin last night’s Cambs Cup tie at home to Sawston United. Reserve keeper Andy Hewitt was also down to start.
The Fenmen should at be full strength for next Saturday’s visit of Wellingborough.
l On October 22 it will be 50 years since Wisbech Town FC switched on their new floodlights at Fenland Park, playing a Chelsea XI and winning 4-2 before a crowd of 2,700.
To commemorate there will be an eight-page supplement in the programme for next Saturday’s match at home to Wellingborough, with a report on the game, pen-pics of the Wisbech players and the then-chairman and manager’s notes.
