WISBECH Town sealed a fourth place finish, their best for five years, following Saturday’s final game of the Ridgeons Premier season at the Tom Woods Beers Fenland Stadium.

The Fenmen’s win over third-bottom Wivenhoe equalled the 2005-06 league position under Dick Creasey.

They had to do it the hard way after going behind on half-an-hour. Rivals Mildenhall Town lost, so Wisbech finished three points ahead of them, and four behind Monday’s League Cup Final opponents Wroxham.

Wisbech manager Steve Appleby said: “I’m delighted to have finished fourth.

“You’re never totally pleased, because I had it in the back of my mind that if we had sorted our season out a bit earlier we could have been in a better position.

“But we made it clear the top six was our target, and we’ve done that.

“Obviously this was only part one of the job done – the other was to get some silverware in the league cup final.”

Darren Jimson levelled in the 40th minute and Simon Flanz converted from the penalty spot following a handball in the box on 60 minutes. Callum Reed hit the woodwork twice.

Appleby added: “It just shows our character that we kept going and got the win.

“They are a big, strong side. They are a very good side going forward, but not so much at the back, so it shows why the league table doesn’t lie.

“But they didn’t just lay down and die even though they have been relegated, so we had to grind out a win again.”
