Final game decides fate

WISBECH Town boss Steve Appleby has his sights on a third place finish to the season in the Ridgeons Premier Division.

His side closed the gap on third-placed Brantham to three points with a third successive win on Saturday at Felixstowe and they are now just three points behind the Essex side before last night’s game against Wroxham.

Wisbech travel to Brantham for the final game of the season on April 28 and that result is almost certain now to decide Wisbech’s fate.

The Fenmen finished fourth last season and before the season started Appleby said his target was to finish higher this season. Two weeks ago fourth place looked the best hope, but Brantham then lost to Ely at the weekend to open things up.

Appleby said: “We will just be looking to get as many points as possible from our remaining games and see where it takes us. We have certainly got a good chance of third place but much will depend on how we get on against Wroxham. But if things work out it could be a very interesting final game at Brantham.”

Wisbech entertain Walsham at the Fenland Stadium this Saturday, but skipper Paul Cousins is banned after picking up two yellow cards in the recent 3-3 draw against CRC.

Appleby has plenty of options with Anthony Reeve or Stacy Cartwright slotting into Cousins’ central defending role.

Denny Escorcio, who missed the Ely and Felixstowe wins, should also come into the squad for this game.
