Wisbech Town FC manager Steve Appleby has made his first capture of the pre-season, with forward Tom James set to join the Fenmen.
The striker has plenty of experience in Wisbech’s new surroundings of the UCL Premier Division as he was with Spalding United and Deeping Rangers last season after being involved in the Boston United youth set-up.
Appleby said of the 19-year-old: “He is a young, exciting talent who will have the fans off their seats.
“He is a skilful, fast player. I have sort of seen him in the last two or three years as a young lad.
“He can play out wide and up front, and I intend to play him as a striker. He does know the league.
“I’ve not had the opportunity to bring him to the club until now. A few people I know speak highly of him. He’s got a lot to learn but has got the talent to go up a level.”
James was with Spalding until February when he joined high-flying UCL rivals Deeping, where he soon settled in and one of the highlights of his stay was in April when he scored a hat-trick against Irchester Utd.
Appleby does not expect to conduct too much pre-season transfer business because he should have wide man/ forward Matt Lunn, who will eventually move to the London area, available until September.
“I’m quite happy with the squad. The boys have been loyal. I’m only looking to add one or two.
“I’m not going to break up the squad, there’s no reason to. We’ve got a settled side who are loyal and committed.
“Young Jack Friend impressed last year and he will get more of a chance.
“If I can add one definitely, and maybe two more, players. Matt Lunn looks as though he will be around until September, hopefully,
“It means we’ve only really lost Chris Bacon and Joe Jackson.”
