March Town 2, Ely City 4 (aet)
The Hares put up a gallant performance in this Ridgeons League Cup-tie before losing out in extra time to the Premier Division rivals at the GER last Tuesday.
They twice came from behind to take the game into extra time and it was perhaps only Ely’s superior fitness in the last hour that swayed the game.
Ely took the lead a little fortuitously when defender Chris Lenton headed into his own net from a long clearance.
March were back on terms with Luke Pepper curling a free kick in to the net not for the first time this season only for Ely to regain the lead with another good strike from outside the area.
Pepper also had another effort cleared off the line and Stu Anderson shot wide when one on one with the keeper.
But March deservedly equalised after 76 minutes when Pepper headed a second goal. Anderson also had another good chance when his lob just went wide of the target.
Ely were the stronger side in extra time and two quick goals settled the tie, but manager Brett Whaley was still pleased with his side’s efforts: “We again showed we can match a Premier Division side in the cup and fully deserved to be level at 90 minutes,” he added.
“They proved that little bit fitter than us in extra time but the lads showed plenty of character. It was difficult to control possession at this level but we put them under pressure and got ourselves back level after the break.”
