March Town FC manager Paul Crosbie faces a race against time to sign a goalkeeper for the Christmas period after Max Flintoff was stretchered off on Saturday.

Flintoff was caught by a challenge which led to Debenham LC’s second late goal and suffered injuries to his knees.

Crosbie said: “Their lad put in a two-footed challenge and everyone stopped expecting the ref to blow up.

“But he didn’t and the lad rolled the ball in the net.”

The Hares boss added: “Now Max is in an Ipswich hospital on the last weekend before Christmas.

“He didn’t have a save to make and we were superior in every department.

“He was in a lot of discomfort and the paramedics had to give him gas.

“As soon as Max was off the referee blew up (outfielder substitute Adam Conyard was in goal for a few seconds) and didn’t play the full 90 minutes.

“Thankfully his family were at the game and the chairman and vice-chairman have stayed overnight with him. We hope it is nothing too serious.

“We are at home to Downham on Saturday and I have to look at the availability and get a goalkeeper registered if needs be.

“I’ll see if I can call in some favours.”

Michael Chow, Jon Gibbons, Aaron McKenna and Sean White all had chances to score for a hard done by away side.

Crosbie added: “We had a stonewall penalty turned down when Michael Chow was pushed in their penalty area.

“Even their manager turned around and said: ‘I’ve got no idea how you didn’t get that’.

“We knew what was coming because they had the wind advantage in horrific windy conditions and driving rain, but we defended resolutely.”

However the Hares went behind when a gust caught the ball which had been heading straight towards Flintoff and the custodian could only fumble the ball over the line.

March: M Flintoff (Conyard), Peacock, Mattless, J Flintoff, Ogden, Jackson, Chow, Gibbons (Lemmon), Dunlop, McKenna, S White.

March are at home to near neighbours Downham Town on Saturday (3pm).

Michael Chow is away for Christmas, while Gary White, Jordan Goult, Lewis Cook and Paul Richardson should all return.
