Manea and Doddington prepare for a mouth-watering cup final clash

MANEA United and Doddington United clash in the North Cambs Cup final at March Town’s GER ground tonight (Wednesday, 7.30pm).

Both teams go into the game in top form after recording good wins in the Cambs League Division Two on Saturday.

Doddington bounced back after a defeat the previous week by beating local rivals March Rangers 3-1 to keep their title hopes very much alive, while Manea enjoyed 2-0 win against Isleham to stay in the hunt for honours.

Gary Smith 2 and Lee Barnett hit the Doddington goals and boss Jock Bedford said: “It was good to come back with a win and if we can win our last four games we will get promotion. We are just one point behind leaders Witchford who have five away games to come, and must play Manea also.”

Bedford took advantage of Manea’s early kick off to spend 30 minutes spying on them on Saturday and commented: “I am sure it will be a good cup final between two good footballing sides. I just hope the best team on the night wins and we are all looking forward to it.”

Manea manager James Waters said his side produced their best display for some time to be beat Isleham with Danny Waite scoring both goals.

He said: “At the start of the season we thought this competition was our best chance of winning something and really the league is a bonus. We should be at full strength for the final and it will be a close game.”

Wisbech St Mary Reserves did both Manea and Doddington a favour on Saturday when holding leaders Witchford to a 3-3 draw.

Upwell had a well deserved 9-0 win against Walsoken this week. Upwell were 4-0 up by half-time with goals from Andy McClagish (2), Hal Paddon and a beautifully struck free kick from Dave Carse.

Jonny Allen made it five just after the break, before sub Matthew Thomas grabbed a hat-trick and Paddon hit his second.
