CALLUM Reed will miss Wisbech Town’s FA Vase fourth round tie against Dunston UTS on January 21 with a suspension after 10 cautions this season.
Reed has been handed a two-game ban which starts with the Dunston game at the Elgood’s Fenland Stadium. Ollie Pinner is also cup-tied having played for Boston Town.
It is the biggest game of the season so far for Wisbech and manager Steve Appleby said: “I have spoken to Callum about it and he is absolutely gutted to be missing the game.
“He has not hit the heights of last season with a couple of injuries not helping, but he is still a big loss for us.
“It is not that Callum is a dirty player but he is a little rash and he has to be careful about dissent too. I do not want to take the fire out of his belly on the pitch but he just needs to calm down a bit when he gets frustrated.”
Reed came on as a substitute at Kirkley after illness but along with Anthony Reeve could have a starting place for this Saturday’s home game against Gorleston in the Ridgeons Premier.
“It was not good at Kirkley. We just collapsed as a team when they scored their first goal. Those that started that day will now have to look over their shoulder,” added Appleby.
Lewis Thompson, who had 90 minutes for the reserves on Saturday, is another player who could be in contention for Saturday.
Appleby will be looking for a big reaction from his players, especially with FA Vase places on the line too, and said: “We need to go on a good run of results. There is still some way to go and I am sure Ely and Brantham will drop more points before the end of the season but we cannot afford to drop too many more points if we are to finish in a promotion place.”
The Ridgeons League have confirmed that Wroxham and Wisbech are the only two teams seeking promotion.
Wroxham’s application is in some doubt as they have to update their ground by the end of March and Wisbech would need to win the league or finish in second place.
Wisbech are also at home next Tuesday night when they entertain Haverhill in the Cambs Invitation Cup quarter-finals (7.45pm).
