Referee complaint after trio sent off

Mildenhall Town 9,

Wisbech Town 0

THE Fenmen will put in an official complaint about the refereeing of Marc Wilson during last Tuesday’s heaviest defeat in four years after they had Simon Ashton, Neal Spafford and Callum Reed sent off in the Ridgeons Premier Division.

The club also took the unusual step of posting on the club fans’ forum the next day statements from boss Steve Appleby, plus chairman Barry Carter and vice-chairman Dave Parsons.

The directors’ statements said: “Barry and Snips [Parsons] are extremely proud of the manager and the players who performed so well in extremely challenging circumstances. Steve Appleby is held in the highest regard by themselves and the rest of the Board of Directors and they cannot emphasise how little blame they place on him for last night’s result.

“An official report into the referee’s performance in the game is being submitted to the FA in London.”

Appleby’s statement said: “I was proud to be their manager and for me to say that on the back of a 9-0 defeat seems ridiculous but anybody who witnessed the game knows truly what went on. The boys showed passion and commitment to the cause. We were on top for most of the first half, even after we went down to nine men.

“We went down to eight men early in the second half and at that point it was still only 1-0. Obviously the lads tired and it resulted in the heavy defeat.

“I won’t go on here and slate a referee but we all know what happened last night and in due course an official report will be made through the correct channels.”

Appleby subsequently added of the three sendings-off: “By all accounts that was Simon and Neal’s first red cards of their career. What I will say is that one dismissal was a red card by the letter of the law, but I’ve got complaints about the two others.”

Despite holding a two-man advantage, it was not until the 36th minute that Mildenhall scored their first goal, and it was not until the final 33 minutes they netted seven times as Wisbech tired.
