Wisbech Town 3
Newport Pagnell 2
Wisbech Town boss Brett Whaley spoke of his relief after starting his reign at the Elgoods Stadium with a 3-2 win over Newport Pagnell.
Danny Beaumont made a goalscoring return after rejoining the club on Friday and Stuart Cobb (pictured left) doubled the lead.
Pagnell were level just after the hour, but Billy Smith’s long-range curler earned the Fenmen the points in front of an excellent attendance of 209 – the biggest crowd of the day in the United Counties Premier Division.
Whaley said: “I was delighted to get the win but not so much with our performance.
“We looked quite nervous at times and didn’t keep the ball very well.
“Had we not conceded straight after scoring our second then I think it would have been a lot more comfortable in the second half.
“When they made it 2-2 we showed a lot of character because you would have expected them to go and win the game.
“That pleased me as we’ve got underway by putting three points on the board and not playing particularly well.
“Newport Pagnell are an experienced UCL side.
“They had spells where they were on top and they will finish the season in the top-six, I’m sure of that.”
The returning Beaumont opened the scoring in the 27th minute before Cobb’s chip doubled the Fenmen’s lead six minutes before the interval.
Sam O’Neill reduced the arrears two minutes later.
Newport were back on level terms after an hour following a neat finish by former Long Buckby player Fazel Koriya.
Wisbech won it with a curling shot into the far corner from Smith after 72 minutes.
