Wisbech Town 3 King’s Lynn Town XI 1
Two goals in the final 20 minutes saw Wisbech Town overcome a young King’s Lynn Town side to lift the Denis Harris Memorial Trophy on Friday night.
An early Matt Sparrow strike was cancelled out by Robbie Palmer before Sparrow’s second and a third from former Linnet Charley Sanders clinched victory for the hosts late on.
The final scoreline was rather harsh on the Linnets who included a handful of first-team squad members in their starting line-up.
Alex Street, Jackson Ramm, Ryan Fryatt, Liam Fryatt, David Bridges and Jack Frohawk all featured at the Elgoods Stadium.
The hosts took the lead in the seventh minute when Sparrow found space on the edge of the box before curling the ball past Street.
Wisbech’s lead only lasted eight minutes when a brilliant finish by Palmer levelled the scores in an absorbing first half.
Lynn were the better side in the first half and could have easily gone into the interval with a slender lead.
The impressive Frohawk, who caused the hosts all kinds of problems with his pace, stung the hands of home goalkeeper Aaron Butcher late in the half.
Frohawk’s pace also saw him turn provider for Palmer but the striker blazed over the woodwork.
The second half again saw chances at either end.
Bridges saw his effort hacked off the line for Lynn, while Wisbech’s Rob Hughes saw his piledriver brilliantly turned behind for a corner by Street.
The Linnets made a number of changes with 16-year-olds Danny Setchell and Kieran Shipp entering the fray in the second period.
Wisbech took the lead for the second time on the night in the 70th minute when the energetic Sparrow found space behind the Lynn defence before placing his shot past Street.
The Fenmen sealed victory in the dying seconds when Sanders sprinted clear to net against his former club.
Lynn’s first team are in action this afternoon, away at Rugby Town, while the Fenmen will now turn their attention to next Saturday’s United Counties League opener against Newport Pagnell.
