Both March teams, Chatteris and Wimblington still in promotion hunt




Wisbech Town’s promotion hopes are over after a seven-wicket Cambs & Hunts Premier League Division One home defeat against Histon on Saturday.

Their sixth defeat of a disappointing season means they are now in seventh place with four games remaining.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Wisbech were a miserable 91 all out from 26.4 overs, only two players making double figures - opener Shalin Navishka De Mel with 29 and Gary Freear with 26.

In reply, the visitors easily made 92-3 from 18.4 overs, with a wicket each for Jonny Garner, De Mel and Freear.

There was also defeat for a depleted March Town, by one run against new leaders Cambourne, as they fell out of the Division Two promotion places for the first time this season.

In an amazingly close game, the visitors decided to bat and registered 192 all out from 42.1 overs. Kian Pooley took 3-29 off 8.1 overs, Stuart Mills 2-31 from seven, Samuel Clarke 2-36 from nine and Agnijan Vaheesan 2-42 from six.

March made a disastrous start to their run chase and stumbled to 50-5 before a 104-run sixth wicket stand from Clarke and Lewis Welcher.

Clarke made 63 from 59 balls, with six fours and two sixes and Welcher 50 from 49 balls, with five fours. Of the rest of the team, only Benjamin Pyle with 17 made double figures.

They needed just five runs to win off the last over but Vaheesan was run out off the penultimate ball, two short of victory, as they fell for 191 from 44.5 overs.

There is still hope for March, who are just 10 points from top spot and one from the second promotion place with two games remaining.

Still in the promotion place are Chatteris, currently second in Senior League Two with two games remaining after an eight-wicket win at Wilbrahams. After electing to bat, the home side were 96 all out from 32.2 overs, Chatteris then reaching 97-2 from 19.4.

In the same division, bottom side Wisbech Town 2nd lost by six wickets at home to Cottenham. After deciding to bat, the home side were all out for 89, Archie Grange-Hall and Simon Freear both making 18 and Oliver Overland 13.

In reply, Cottenham made 90-4 from 17 overs, Freear taking 3-22 from five and Adam Gardner 1-35 from seven.

March 2nd remain top of Junior Four North following a 47-run win at Burwell & Exning 4th. After winning the toss and electing to bat, March were 246 all out from 37.4 overs, acting captain James Hilliard scoring 74 from 63 balls, with seven fours and five sixes.

He was supported by Kammari Suryaprakash with 39, 16-year-old Harry Lefevre with 35, Aravund Turaka with 22, D Willis with 11 and M Patel with 10.

The home side were then all out for 199 from 33 overs. Seventeen-year-old Tejas Madivada took 5-28 from seven, Hilliard 3-27 from three, with a wicket each for Willis and Turaka.

Wimblington are third and still in with a chance of promotion after a nine-wicket win at Longstanton Grasshoppers. After being put into bat, the home side were all out for 111 from 39 overs, Matty Day taking 3-29 from eight, Jason Bullman 3-38 from eight, Kyle Butler 2-9 from six and Leon Walker 1-3 from eight.

The visitors then raced to 114-1 from 15.4 overs. Opener Bullman made 69 from 50 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes, and fellow opener Adam Baker 29.

Wisbech Town 3rd had no game this week.

In Junior Five North, Chatteris 2nd beat visitors Camden 2nd by nine wickets. After being asked to bat, Camden were 77 all out from 22.5 overs, Matthews taking 4-30 from 7.5 overs, Arthur Arnold 2-10 from 5.1, and a wicket each for A Gunn and Jago Pearson.

Chatteris then made 80-1 from 12.2 overs, opener Luke Arnold 41 not out and G Brennan 23 not out.

Wisbech Town 4th had no fixture.
