The youngest members of the Chatteris Kingfishers squad have already been in action this year, after a winter break, a week’s training in Whittlesey and a week back in the Empress pool in Chatteris.

They took part in the second round of the series of mini-meets at Peterborough and performed very well indeed, with 26 personal best times and eight top-three finishes.

The 9-11 year old boys swam 50m front crawl and 50m breaststroke, with the 9 year olds swimming 100m I.M. and the 11 year olds 200m I.M., whilst the girls swam 200m front crawl, 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke.

Freddie Allen, Harry Rayner and Hayden Wareing (all 9) swam their first-ever 100m I.M., with Freddie finishing in an amazing second place, Harry in eighth and Hayden ninth.

Other results: Freddie 2nd 50m breaststroke (PB), Harry 8th (PB), Hayden 9th; 50m front crawl: Freddie 22nd (PB), Hayden 39th, Harry 40th.

11 year old boys, 50m breaststroke: Riley Astley 2nd, Thomas Hanley 3rd (PB) and Oliver Ayres 9th in his first-ever 50m breaststroke race; 200m I.M. Thomas 3rd (PB), Riley 4th in his first-ever 200m I.M.; 50m front crawl all 3 boys swam PB times.

There was a big battle between the 11-year old girls in the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke and 200m front crawl, with Hallie White leading the pack, finishing in 5th, 3rd and 7th places respectively, with a massive p.b,. in her 200m front crawl.

She was followed by Maise Harper, Kiara Kovacs, Naomi Lambert-Di Marco, Kiera Simpson and Molly Noble, the last four tackling the 200m front crawl for the first time.

Other results: Megan Dawson (12) did the club proud, 6th in 50m butterfly (PB), fourth in both 50m backstroke and 200m front crawl (PB). Also swimming: 10-year olds Amy Cooper and Melissa Ablett.

The next competition will be this weekend, when several swimmers will be competing in the Biggleswade Open Meet, before joining the entire squad for the Mendis Trophy in Wisbech.
