Wisbech sides produce some fine displays on the hockey pitch

It was a busy and exciting weekend for Wisbech Hockey Club, with eight teams in action and plenty of goals, drama, and promising performances across the board.

From strong wins to hard-fought draws, the club showcased both quality and spirit across every level.

Wisbech Men’s 1sts secured a solid 2-0 victory over Peterborough in a disciplined and hard-fought encounter.

Both sides started cautiously, with possession changing hands frequently, but Danny Haynes broke the deadlock early to give Wisbech a deserved lead.

After the break, Wisbech took full control of the game, pressing high and maintaining composure in possession.

Jason Mallett added a second goal to seal the win, while the defence held firm to ensure a well-earned clean sheet.

Haynes was named Player of the Match for his decisive contribution and tireless work throughout.

The Ladies 1sts played out one of the weekend’s most entertaining matches, drawing 4-4 with St Neots in a thrilling end-to-end contest.

Laura opened the scoring from a short corner before St Neots equalised through a swift counterattack. #Izzy Pope restored Wisbech’s lead with a clever deflection, only for St Neots to pull level again before half-time.

The hosts struck twice early in the second half as Wisbech began to tire, but the visitors showed outstanding resilience.

Late goals from Ellie Padmore and Pope earned Wisbech a well-deserved point.

The side will look to build on that fighting spirit when they host Peterborough next weekend.

Wisbech Men’s 2nds suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat against St Ives in a game that could easily have gone either way.

Despite creating several late chances, Wisbech were unable to find an equaliser.

Man of the Match went to Daniel Klibanecz, who impressed with his ability to link defence and attack, while Player of the Match Lee Punter received praise for his strong performance after a long absence.

Wisbech Ladies 2nds earned a 1-1 draw with Long Sutton 1s after a competitive, end-to-end match.

The visitors struck first before the break, but Wisbech fought back in the second half, with Claire Burton netting the equaliser midway through.

The team enjoyed long spells of possession and looked the stronger side for much of the game.

Defensively, Amber Crossley-King and Player of the Match Lucy Ludlow stood out for their anticipation and tackling.

The all-Wisbech men’s derby saw the 3rds come out 6-0 winners over the youthful 4ths side, though the scoreline didn’t reflect the spirit of the game.

The 3rds dominated the first half, racing to a 5-0 lead through four goals from Player of the Match Brodie Ellis and strikes from Mike Lawrence and Chris Stanhope.

After a rousing half-time talk, the 4ths regrouped, showing grit and determination to limit their opponents to just one more goal.

Youngster George Bester shone in midfield, earning the 4ths Man of the Match award for a composed and mature performance.

Wisbech Ladies 3rds put in a dominant display against St Ives but were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw.

They controlled possession, built patiently from the back, and created several promising chances but couldn’t find the finishing touch.

Debutant Erika Harvey and returning player Sharon Empson impressed in defence, while Molly Evans took Player of the Match honours for her tireless midfield performance and creativity on the ball.

The Ladies 4ths showed great progress with a spirited 2-2 draw at home to St Ives 4s.

Charlotte Holt fired Wisbech ahead early before Zoe Forder doubled the advantage ten minutes into the second half.

However, two late goals from St Ives denied them victory.

Player of the Match went to Elysha Wood-McDermid for her strong tackling, composure under pressure, and excellent distribution.

With four teams back in action at home next weekend at Harecroft Road, Wisbech Hockey Club will look to build on another encouraging weekend of performances and results.
