Cambs City 3rds 8 Wisbech Ladies 0

A Wisbech team missing eight regular players travelled to second in league Cambs City.

Wisbech were up against it from the very start with City playing a fast and effective passing game utilising the width and their superior experience. Goals came at regular intervals with Wisbech trailing 0-4 at half-time.

However, at no point could you say that Wisbech were completely dominated. The ladies showed immeasurable tenacity and determination to fight for every ball and at times they had held the ball for long periods with confidence and good passing and movement.

Amber Scott – playing on the left wing – made many trademark runs, beating players with great ball skill and tempered aggression. The midfield of Ellie Padmore, Lou Sandall, Beth Holmes and Lucy Prior worked tirelessly and were ably supported by the forward players, with Jane Peggs rolling back the years to put in a defensive shift.

The second half started and finished the same as the first, however it would be fair to say that a lot of this was against the run of play. The back three of Ali Mason, Lorraine Parker and the impressive debutant Izzy Gowler worked incredibly hard.

Throughout the game Issy Oldershaw-Ellis performed minor miracles in a sweeper role. Right at the death debutant Oliwia Bolka won a deserved short corner that saw Issy’s thunderous effort sadly deflected around the post.

Wisbech can be immensely proud of their efforts in extraordinary circumstances and the future of the club can only be bright with so many young ladies showing skill, determination and teamwork to match a much stronger City team.

The whole team can hold their heads high and be very proud of their performance regardless of the score.

PoM: Issy Oldershaw-Ellis.

n Huge thanks to Neale-Wade (March) for accommodating all the club’s home matches this week. The club is incredibly appreciative of all the support received from other venues and its own members.
