Wisbech Grammar School scorers Issy Oldershaw-Ellis, Ella Scott and Tia Bideau fire up hockey county title

Wisbech Grammar School 1st X1 U18 girls were crowned county champions at the Tier 4 County Finals in Cambridge.

The team first faced Kimbolton and although WGS went 1–0 up in the first six minutes they dominated the game and managed to pull back the score from a short corner, with an incredible shot by Issy Oldershaw-Ellis at the top of the circle.

After the interval, the WGS girls settled and started to play some good interlocking hockey and it wasn’t long before they took the lead with an unstoppable shot from Ella Scott to win 2–1.

The other two games were won with the same margin, the second against Saffron Walden with Tia Bideau scoring early on to enable the WGS team to settle. Saffron Walden levelled but Scott bagged the winner.

The final game versus Stephen Perse was intense with opportunities being missed at either end, but both goalkeepers made several impressive saves. In the second half Bideau and Scott found the net.


Sunday – Wisbech under-16 vs Newmarket U16

On a wet morning, a strong start from Wisbech at Harecroft Road saw them take an early 7-0 lead as the game settled in to an evenly-matched arm wrestle.

A couple of mistakes started creeping into the Wisbech game allowing Newmarket to level.

Wisbech's poor discipline gave away two consecutive penalties, Newmarket converting both to take a 13-7 lead.

The second half saw Wisbech back on track in the ascendancy, helped by the substitutes, with five further tries and two conversions to win 29-20.

In a very good game of football, both teams played very well.

However March held the upper-hand throughout. Thurlby took the lead, before March equalised through a cracking shot from DJ Moore and took the lead with a great left foot shot through Kallum Jupp. In the second half March increased their lead with another good goal from Spencer Stabler.

Wisbech’s Danny was named the Valiant Properties man of the match for of the match for his non-stop work rate both in attack and defence.
