On Saturday morning the weather halted almost all of the scheduled hockey league matches for Wisbech.

Neale-Wade Academy had kindly agreed to accommodate all home matches but unfortunately a section of their pitch just wouldn’t defrost despite the sun shining.

Away teams had their matches postponed for the same reason. The only team able to complete their fixture were the men’s 1sts.

Wisbech Men 1

Wisbech looked to build on their positive point from the previous week against Bedford. East London had bettered them in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

In a game of two halves Wisbech dominated and could have had goals from numerous chances created.

They eventually took a deserved lead through Scott Welcher, who reacted quickest from a short corner breakdown. They continued to press for a second but it just didn’t come.

After the break it was a completely different story. Wisbech defended resolutely, but the opposition equalised thanks to an excellent solo goal from their right back.

It was a backs-against-the-wall job for the last 15 minutes as Wisbech failed to keep control of possession but they held on to take another point.

They face Cambridge City next weekend and will look to build on two positive performances.
