Big week of cup action as March face cup games against Newmarket and Saffron Walden
It’s a huge week of cup football for March Town United - and Ash Taylor’s side couldn’t be in better form.
The Hares romped to a stunning 6-0 victory at Leicester Nirvana on Saturday in the United Counties Premier Division South.
Goals from Ben Tait, Matthew Foy, Flo Tsaguim, James Hill-Seekings, and Rio Henson powered Taylor’s men to a sixth straight away win in the league, a sequence that’s seen them score 19 goals and concede just two.
It was also another clean sheet - the tenth of the season - for October’s Player of the Month Jonah Gill.
The Hares sit third in the table, five points behind leaders Nuneaton Town, but with a game in hand.
Speaking after the emphatic win, Taylor was full of praise for his side’s ruthless display.
“It’s kind of historically been a really tough place to go, so to get a 6-0 win here is great,” said Taylor.
“The lads deserve massive credit. It wasn’t an easy game, but we were just ruthless today. We understood where we could hurt them, and we took advantage.”
March were four goals up by half-time, displaying a clinical streak in front of goal.
“It’s just nice seeing us be so clinical and ruthless,” Taylor added.
“We had five different goalscorers today, which is brilliant. There’s a lot of variation in what we do at the moment and when your forward line is firing like that, you’re a dangerous team.”
The victory at Leicester set the tone for what is shaping up to be a defining week for the Hares.
Tomorrow night, the Hares begin the defence of their Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup crown with a tough trip to Step 4 side Newmarket Town, who are flying high in the Isthmian League North.
Taylor kknows it would be a stern test against familiar opposition.
“I know Shinni (Newmarket manager Michael Shinn) really well,” he said.
“They’re doing brilliantly at Step 4 and are much more equipped for the level this season. It’ll be a really challenging game.
"We’re the holders, so of course we want to retain the trophy but it’s also a great chance to test ourselves.”
He has hinted at a considered approach to team selection for the midweek clash.
“It’s not about picking the strongest 11, it’s about picking the right 11 for the game," he said.
"We’ll look at what they bring and choose the type of players we need to compete.”
Once the dust settles from the county cup, attention quickly turns to Saturday’s FA Vase Second Round trip to Saffron Walden Town.
The Bloods, currently sixth in the Essex Senior League, play at the same step as March, setting up what promises to be another tight and intriguing encounter.
March Town: Gill, Francisco, Brumby, Saunders (Hook), Emmington, King, Tsaguim, Foy (Green), Hill-Seekings (Allen), Tait (Knowles), Henson (Cotton). Star man: James Hill-Seekings.
Attendance: 129.
