Needham Market Res 2

Jack Friend converted a last-gasp spot kick to give the home side a share of the spoils at the ABC Quality Meats Stadium on Saturday.

Saints were starting their third consecutive year as a step 6 side against a lively and youthful Needham Market side and, with a crowd of more than 100 at the ABC, were ahead after six minutes through debutant Sol Goodley.

Chances came and went for Wisbech St Mary and in 15 second half minutes they saw themselves 2-1 down to some very quick counter-attacking football.

But with a never-say-die attitude Saints were rewarded with a penalty in the 90th minute when Stuart Beckett was hauled to the ground from a Saints set play.

Friend slotted the spot kick home.

Saints: Drew Barker, Josh Burrows, Tom Chilton, Ben Coe, Jack Friend, Sol Goodby, Jordan Goult, George Hutton, Daniel Short, Joe Woodhouse, Adam Wright. Substitutes: Stuart Beckett, Ethan Goodale, Curtis Knight.

Saints travelled away to Swaffham last night (Tuesday) for another Thurlow Nunn Division One North encounter.

March Town United finished their pre-season fixtures with a 3-0 win over Netherton United. Goals came from Adam Rothery, Toby Allen and a own goal.

The Hares’ first Thurlow Nunn League First Division North game of the campaign was last night (Tuesday) at home to King’s Lynn Reserves, who have snapped up Gavin Caney, who trained with March during the summer.

March waived the seven-day approach.

March also play at their GER headquarters next Saturday against Needham Market Res, while Wisbech St Mary entertain Debenham LC.

A raft of new players at the GER, combined with a lack of availability at times, and the postponement of their final home friendly against Ely City due to bad weather and storms, have hampered pre-season preparations.

Those thundery torrential downpours also caused damage to the GER stand roof, which has now been repaired.

Hares 2018/19 season tickets are now available.

Entry to all home Thurlow Nunn ECL D1 matches can be granted for the cost of: adults £80, concessions £30.

Hares manager Brett Whaley said although his side was slightly under-cooked, their challenge is to keep improving.
